Additive manufacturing processes are rapidly evolving from prototyping tools to truly manufacturing systems, thanks to the recent progresses in terms of maximum size of the printed structures and available materials. In such fields the development of adaptive and stimuli-responsive components through 4D printing approaches is expected to have a deep impact. This activity is aimed at shedding new light on the fundamental aspects of three-dimensional polymerization and melt extrusion processes, thus establishing new process design rules and predictive tools for improving printing resolution. It will also specifically engineer additive manufacturing for printing polymeric materials embedding active molecular compounds, thus leading to structures that have three-dimensional features and time-changing physical properties at the same time.
