EDUCATION: SECONDARY SCHOOL LEVEL

NANO Researchers also organize several initiatives for secondary schools, in strict co-operation with their University Department and with local schools in home cities and surroundings, with the purpose to maintain a strong link with teachers and to support them with information, updates, and direct collaboration on request.

Some S3 researchers have developed an ad hoc website

EDUCATION: PHD LEVEL

NANO Centers promote education at PhD level by training a large number of PhD students who participate in their research activities.

PhD Students from Scuola Normale Superiore participate in activities at NEST whereas ECMT researchers train and work with students from ISUFI and University of Salento. S3 has played a major role in the establishment of the Graduate School in Physics and Nanoscience together with the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia.

TWO PhD POSITIONS AVAILABLE WITHIN THE EU NETWORK INDEX in Modena, Italy

Two three-year PhD positions are available to work at the Center S3 of Nanoscience Institute.

The positions will be available starting in the period July - October 2012, depending on arrangements with successful candidates.

These positions are reserved to students who have not resided or carried out their main activity (work , studies, etc) in Italy for more than 12 months in the last 3 years (short stays such as holidays are not taken into account). The successful candidates will be enrolled within the PhD school in Physics and Nanoscience of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia.

The economic treatment will comply with EU rules for Marie Curie actions.

The prospective candidates will develop a theoretical description of the coherent transport of excitons, i.e., bosonic-like particles which are elementary excitations of solid-state materials.

The project sets within the context of the recently funded European Marie Curie ITN network INDEX (http://www.indexitn.eu), which is devoted to the study of fundamental physics and applications of indirect excitons in semiconductor devices.

The two PhD projects will separately address the following theoretical topics:

(i) development of the computational tools for the simulation of the coherent dynamics of indirect excitons in complex time-varying fields in semiconductor excitonic devices;

(ii) coherent manipulation and transfer of spin through transport of excitons / Cooper pairs.

The ideal candidates have a solid background in condensed matter physics and / or software development.

They will work in a lively multi-disciplinary international context, carrying part of their research activity jointly with one of the partner institutions of the INDEX network, including University of California San Diego, CNRS (France), FORTH (Greece), University of Cambridge.

Accordingly, they will spend a few months at partner INDEX foreign nodes.

The projects will be carried out at the S3 Center in Modena, an interdisciplinary national research center focused on various aspects of nanoscience and condensed matter physics (both theoretical and experimental). The theory unit masters and develops a wide range of theoretical tools, from ab initio density functional to exact diagonalization and semiempirical schemes applied to investigate the structural, electronic, transport and optical properties of materials.

Female candidates are encouraged to apply.

Deadline: 29 April 2012.

  The evalutation will go through a two-step process. Candidates that will pass the CV prescreening will be contacted soon after the closing date. Please send CV and enquires by e-mail, quoting the INDEX project, to Massimo Rontani.

FARE FISICA CAMPUS @ S3

What. FareFisica is an one-week school organized by the Physics Department of University of Modena and Reggio Emilia and CNR NANO S3 Center. Students will attend lectures, laboratories, workshops, guided tours of labs, meetings with physicists who work in research and in industry. By living such a tight experience with scientists, professors and students, the participants will

- have an outlook of frontier research in physics of the matter, nanosciences, and related technologies;

- develop their own projects about the structural, electronic, magnetic, and mechanical properties of solids at nano-scale, of biomolecules, and of nanodevices;

- get familiar with the main research techniques.

Who. The School is open to students from the 4th years of high school who want to make an experience on technical-scientific topics. A normal level of high-school knowledge is sufficient to participate.

When.  The school takes place the last school-week in June, and activities cover the whole day. Usually, in a day a student will work in small teams in labs, and attend common activities as seminars and guided tours.

How. Attendance is free and the school is held at University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, in the Scientific Campus of via Campi, Modena. The site is easily reachable by bus from the Modena Bus or Train Stations.

Info about enrollment are sent to shools and to interested teachers in February.

A dedicated website is also available here.

Places are limited.
