TWO PhD POSITIONS AVAILABLE WITHIN THE EU NETWORK INDEX in Modena, Italy
Two three-year PhD positions are available to work at the Center S3 of Nanoscience Institute.
The positions will be available starting in the period July - October 2012, depending on arrangements with successful candidates.
These positions are reserved to students who have not resided or carried out their main activity (work , studies, etc) in Italy for more than 12 months in the last 3 years (short stays such as holidays are not taken into account). The successful candidates will be enrolled within the PhD school in Physics and Nanoscience of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia.
The economic treatment will comply with EU rules for Marie Curie actions.
The prospective candidates will develop a theoretical description of the coherent transport of excitons, i.e., bosonic-like particles which are elementary excitations of solid-state materials.
The project sets within the context of the recently funded European Marie Curie ITN network INDEX (http://www.indexitn.eu), which is devoted to the study of fundamental physics and applications of indirect excitons in semiconductor devices.
The two PhD projects will separately address the following theoretical topics:
(i) development of the computational tools for the simulation of the coherent dynamics of indirect excitons in complex time-varying fields in semiconductor excitonic devices;
(ii) coherent manipulation and transfer of spin through transport of excitons / Cooper pairs.
The ideal candidates have a solid background in condensed matter physics and / or software development.
They will work in a lively multi-disciplinary international context, carrying part of their research activity jointly with one of the partner institutions of the INDEX network, including University of California San Diego, CNRS (France), FORTH (Greece), University of Cambridge.
Accordingly, they will spend a few months at partner INDEX foreign nodes.
The projects will be carried out at the S3 Center in Modena, an interdisciplinary national research center focused on various aspects of nanoscience and condensed matter physics (both theoretical and experimental). The theory unit masters and develops a wide range of theoretical tools, from ab initio density functional to exact diagonalization and semiempirical schemes applied to investigate the structural, electronic, transport and optical properties of materials.
Female candidates are encouraged to apply.
Deadline: 29 April 2012.
The evalutation will go through a two-step process. Candidates that will pass the CV prescreening will be contacted soon after the closing date. Please send CV and enquires by e-mail, quoting the INDEX project, to Massimo Rontani.
