Title: Coloring atoms: chemical characterization of nanostructures at sub-nm resolution in the TEM

Abstract: Advanced materials require control of the structural properties at sub-nanometer or atomic scale. Chemical information at high spatial resolution is possible by taking advantage of image or probe aberration correction in the transmission electron microscope (AC-TEM and AC-STEM). In this talk, I will present some results obtained from nanostructures. In the first example I will show how to image the anion and cation sublattice of colloidal QDs by retrieving image amplitude and phase in the TEM. This is compared with AC- STEM, which is nowadays the technique to achieve semi-quantitative o quantitative information, e.g. imaging antisite defects in LiFePO4 cathodes for Li-ion batteries. By combining the high beam current from probe correction with high energy resolution of monochromated sources, spectroscopic information can be extracted, as it is demonstrated by mapping localized plasmons in doped Cu3-xP nanocrystals.
