Abstract:
The possibility to control light properties (polarization, light amplification, generation of harmonics, photo-induced refractive index anisotropy) by optical signals demand for the engineering of new optical materials with tailored optical properties. In such framework, organic and bio-materials are particularly advantageous, as both hosting matrix and active molecules and nanostructures. In particular, hybrid systems are being developed for various opto-electronic applications, which include optical gain, data transfer or storage, all-optical switching, which pave the way for building reconfigurable optical systems, networks, light amplifiers and logic gates. In this respect, interesting opportunities are opened by the recent progresses of additive manufacturing technologies including three-dimensional (3D) printing, especially for building system with complex architectures.
In this talk, I will provide an overview of the materials and optical systems developed for light-responsive and lasing devices. The experimental results regarding optical and nonlinear optical properties of the selected organic molecules (both, luminescent and nonlinear optical chromophores) will be discussed. Then, a short description of hybrid optical systems based on biomaterials will be presented. Finally, I will show how the organic-based 3D printed structures can serve as optically active components, such optical phase retarders or light-controlled switches.
