Title: Holography and the emergence of spacetime

Abstract: Our point of view on spacetime has evolved along the centuries: from the Newtonian fixed stage where physics takes place, it was promoted by Einstein to both stage and active player in the dynamics. More recently, a further shift in the interpretation of spacetime has been proposed in the context of holography and the gauge/gravity duality: spacetime and its geometry can in fact be thought of as emergent structures, encoded as an hologram in a lower-dimensional theory. In this seminar, after a heuristic review of holography and the gauge/gravity duality, I will present a few explicit constructions of the hologram: large N strongly coupled matrix quantum mechanics, the tensor network/MERA interpretation of the holographic direction, and the reconstruction of the BTZ black hole from the so-called quantum information metric.
